FOR
RELEASE ON SATURDAY, MAY 22
Apprisen Financial
Advocates/Consumer Credit Counseling Services and Linda Danter,
executive director of New Directions Career
Center, 199 East Rich St., received the 2010 Charles B. Jenkins Legacy Awards
from Employment for Seniors (EFS) on Friday (May 21).
The awards were presented during a dinner at Trillium Place, a residential
center for seniors in northwest Columbus, to an organization and individual that
had profound impacts on the lives of seniors in central Ohio in 2009.
Other finalists for this year's Legacy Awards were Eddie Powell, of CEAN/Community
Employment Assistance Network, for the individual award and the Martin de Porres
Center for the organization award.
Presented annually in May by the EFS board of trustees, the awards are
named after Chuck Jenkins, former EFS executive director, whose assistance to
seniors in central Ohio was a model for others to follow.
Apprisen, located at 4500 East Broad St., is the largest one-on-one free
financial counseling service in Ohio. It provided approximately 1,500 seniors
with counseling services in 2009.
Danter last year created a program exclusively for seniors called,
"Bridging Professional Divide: Technology and Communication Keys for Today's
Workplace." The 56-hour program focuses on computer, communications,
interviewing and other skills for seniors in the job market.
Carol A. Ventresca, EFS executive director, told the dinner audience that
the Columbus-based EFS is an "advocate for those mature job-seekers who do not
have the resources, contacts, and information necessary to compete and succeed
in the current employment maze."
She added, "The good news – our clients are finding employment! In April,
many clients contacted us with great employment news. Not only are they helping
themselves and their families, they are also contributing to the local
economy.''
In 2009, more than 1,200 individuals registered for the free job-search
and placement assistance from EFS. Demand for EFS services is increasing and is
projected to continue to rise until the economic picture for seniors improves.
EFS also conducted a silent auction to raise money for its valuable
services. EFS is funded entirely by donations, grants and proceeds from the
annual fundraisers.
