Employment for Seniors 15th Annual Senior Job Fair a Success By Phil Rudell The slumping economy contributed to a large turnout of job seekers at the 15th annual Central Ohio Senior Job Fair on Sept. 11. Organizers described the event, at DeVry University, 1350 Alum Creek Dr., as a "huge success." More than 700 people attended the job fair, which featured 13 workshops on a variety of skills, including interviewing, resume writing, job searches and networking. The seminar sessions, which ran from 8:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m., were capped by a panel discussion of hiring managers on what employers were looking for in prospective workers. The event had 26 exhibitors, including 15 employers actively recruiting new staff members. The job fair was conducted by the Columbus-based Employment for Seniors (EFS), a non-profit organization for job seekers age 50 or older. Program sponsors included the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging, the Franklin County Office on Aging and DeVry University. Media sponsors were WBNS 10TV, The Columbus Dispatch and WMNI-AM. "We were very pleased with the participation, particularly in the many seniors who took advantage of the wonderful workshops provided," said Carol A. Ventresca, executive director of EFS. "During difficult economic times, Employment for Seniors will continue to reach out to the mature job seekers and assist them in their career transitions.” |
